About speech therapy
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) specialise in communication and swallowing disorders. We help people relearn how to speak, understand, read and write after a stroke or brain injury, and to eat and drink safely when swallowing becomes difficult.
An SLP can help patients maintain their swallowing and eating ability after radiation therapy and chemotherapy for head and neck cancers, and can help people with cognitive problems improve their memory and organisation skills.
Our goal is a return to daily life: talking with family, going back to work, enjoying a meal, and taking part in the things that matter to each person.
Services
Assessment and therapy for inpatients and outpatients at Faircape Health Institute, as part of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team.
Rebuilding the ability to find words, follow conversation, read and write after a stroke or brain injury.
Bedside assessment, safe-swallow strategies, diet and fluid recommendations, and rehabilitation exercises.
Improving clarity, breath support and voice when the muscles or planning for speech are affected.
Strategies for attention, memory, organisation and problem-solving that support everyday communication.
Helping patients maintain swallowing and eating ability during and after radiation and chemotherapy.
Supporting safe, comfortable eating and the ability to communicate needs during palliative or end-of-life care.
Assessment and therapy for voices that have become weak, hoarse, breathy or tired. This includes voice changes after a stroke, with Parkinson's disease, after time on a ventilator or breathing tube, or with vocal cord weakness. Therapy builds breath support, loudness and vocal strength so you can be heard clearly again.

Our approach
We follow the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. The ICF sees a person's level of functioning as a dynamic interaction between their health condition, their environment and their personal factors.
Following this holistic approach, the Faircape Health multidisciplinary team (MDT) provides speech therapy according to the ICF. This lets the team assess not only speech-related difficulties but all areas of functioning, including the ability to swallow and to communicate needs during palliative or end-of-life care.
Our team
Our speech therapists share a special interest in adult neurology, with experience across acute, ICU, sub-acute and community settings. We work closely with each patient and their family to make therapy practical, collaborative and focused on everyday life.
